Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce

Ingredients
- 400 g spaghetti (or any pasta)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (796 ml) tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)
- Grated Parmesan (to taste)
Preparation
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes).
- Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes (or tomato sauce), tomato paste (if using), sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Let simmer on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain.
- Toss the pasta with the sauce or pour the sauce over the pasta. Mix well.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil and grated Parmesan.
