Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce

Ingredients

  • 400 g spaghetti (or any pasta)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (796 ml) tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)
  • Grated Parmesan (to taste)

Preparation

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes).
  2. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes (or tomato sauce), tomato paste (if using), sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Let simmer on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain.
  6. Toss the pasta with the sauce or pour the sauce over the pasta. Mix well.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil and grated Parmesan.
